Freelance Friends Spotlight with Corinna Miller

I realised the world hadn’t ended because I wasn’t sitting at my desk at 9am after a 2-hour commute. It was glorious.

Hey Corinna! Could you tell us a bit about yourself? Who are ya, where do you come from and what do you do?

Hi, I’m Corinna, and I’m actually from Maryland in the United States, near Washington, DC. But I moved to London 10 years ago for Uni. It was my first time out of the country!

After COVID, my partner and I decided to move to Canterbury, Kent, to save money and get a dog. We realised those two things were quite contradictory after we got our puppy, but we are pretty settled now.

I started Copy by Corinna earlier this year. It’s my freelance copywriting business where I write copy (duh) for women-led and sustainable companies. Blogs, newsletters, web content, brand guidelines, brochures, you name it.

Can you recall a moment when you suddenly realised, ‘Yes, this is exactly what I should be doing’?

I remember waking up at 8:30 am one day earlier this year. I spent the next 45 minutes that morning playing with my dog. I realised the world hadn’t ended because I wasn’t sitting at my desk at 9am after a 2-hour commute. It was glorious.

What do you think your younger self would say about you now? How would they feel meeting you?

One of the main reasons I went freelance was for my mental health, which I still struggle with. I think my younger self would be proud I am doing something I love without spending hours and hours commuting and being stressed all the time. I am able to write and work with awesome people without putting my own mental health on the sidelines.

In five years, what’s your dream scenario for yourself and your work? What are you most excited about?

I am most excited about working with people excited to be making change in their industries. If there are ways my copywriting skills can help change-makers market their sustainable products, or help an organisation that wants to empower women in the workplace, or create a campaign looking to break barriers for LGBTQ+ and minorities, I want to be a part of it.

The slightly less Miss American answer (though I do mean what I said!), I’d love to help other freelancers looking to improve their writing skills. There is a lot of shit out there that can be super confusing and contradictory. I know some people think that they can just rely on AI or write basic copy, but writing to get someone to actually do something takes more psychology then you might think.

If you could sit down with someone just starting out on their own freelance or entrepreneurial path, what one piece of advice would you love to give them?

Network! Sorry, I know that’s a scary word for a lot of people. But there are so many ways to network nowadays, you don’t need to wear a powersuit and plaster a smile on your face for hours at a corporate event. I think younger generations are realising that there are new ways to get together and chat that won’t be exclusive or exclusionary (like Freelance Friends!). It’s easier said than done, I know, but making an effort to go to a networking meet up or even an online event can lead to amazing things for you and your business.

Picture this.. You’re stranded on a desert island and you can only listen to one song forever. What song would you choose and why?

Cherry Bomb by The Runaways. I am obsessed with Joan Jett, she is the queen of my heart.

And how can we find you on the internet!?

I am active on LinkedIn, so that’s always the best shout, just Corinna Miller. If you think you might need a copywriter, or want to chat about your brand voice, web content, or dogs, you can check out my website www.copybycorinna.com.
