So you’ve decided that you want to go freelance – congrats!
Let’s talk about something that might be holding you back right now: the fear of starting before everything feels ready.
Spoiler alert: there’s never going to be that ideal moment when everything falls into place. The stars will never perfectly align – and that’s actually a good thing.
The Trap of Waiting for the Right Moment
We’ve all been there. You want to launch your freelance career, but you’re waiting for:
- The ideal client
- The perfect website
- That shiny new laptop
- A polished LinkedIn profile
- A fully decked-out home office
- Your own custom email address
“Once I have x I’ll be ready to start.” – The Person That Never Starts
Sound familiar?
This, my friend, is what we call the Starter’s Paradox. It’s that sneaky little voice telling you, “Just wait until conditions are perfect.” But here’s the thing, those perfect conditions? They’re a myth.
Example: Lights, Camera… Inaction?
Let’s break this down with a real-world example. Imagine you want to start a YouTube channel to showcase your freelance skills. The Starter’s Paradox might have you thinking:
- “I need a professional camera”
- “My lighting setup isn’t good enough”
- “I should wait until I have a proper studio”
But guess what? Your iPhone camera is better than what most YouTubers started with.
Natural light from a window can work wonders. And some of the most successful YouTubers began by filming in their bedrooms.
The truth? Your content and personality matter way more than fancy equipment.
Why Starting Now Matters (Like, Really Matters)
1. Learning by Doing
There’s only so much you can learn from reading blogs, books or watching tutorials. The real growth happens when you’re into the thing, making mistakes, and figuring things out on the fly.
2. Feedback is Gold
You can’t improve what you haven’t started. By putting yourself out there, you’ll get invaluable feedback from real clients and peers. This feedback is worth its weight in gold for your freelance career.
3. Building Momentum
Starting creates momentum. It’s like pushing a boulder downhill – the hardest part is getting it moving, but once it’s rolling, it’s much easier to keep it going.
4. Overcoming Fear
The longer you wait, the more daunting the task seems in your mind. Starting now helps you realise it’s not as scary as you thought.
How to Break Free from the Starter’s Paradox
1. Embrace the MVP (Minimum Viable Product)
In the tech world, they talk about launching with an MVP – the most basic version of your product that still works. Apply this to your freelance career:
- What’s the simplest way you can start offering your services?
- What’s the bare minimum you need to create your first portfolio piece?
- What’s the quickest way you can establish an online presence?
Start there. You will upgrade your offerings and marketing later.
2. Set Ridiculously Small Goals
Instead of “Launch my freelance business,” try:
- “Reach out to one potential client this week.”
- “Create one sample piece for my portfolio.”
- “Spend 15 minutes brainstorming business names.”
Small wins build confidence and momentum.
3. Use What You Have
Look around. What resources do you already have at your disposal?
- A smartphone? That’s a camera, voice recorder, and portable office.
- A free afternoon? That’s time to create your first piece of content.
- A friend who needs help? That’s your first client.
You probably have more than you realise to get started.
4. Reframe “Failure” as “Learning”
Every misstep is a lesson in disguise. If your first client project doesn’t go perfectly, great! You’ve just gained valuable experience that will make your next project even better.
The Power of “Good Enough”
Here’s a little secret: your first attempts don’t need to be amazing. They just need to be good enough to start. Remember:
- Your first blog post won’t go viral.
- Your first design won’t win awards.
- Your first client project won’t be flawless.
And that’s okay. What matters is that you’re in the game and you’ve started.
Quantity and repetition creates quality.
Why This Matters for Freelancers
As freelancers, we’re our own bosses. That’s awesome, but it also means we’re responsible for pushing ourselves forward. There’s no manager setting deadlines or colleagues to keep us accountable.
By overcoming the Starter’s Paradox, you’re not just launching your freelance career – you’re developing a crucial skill that will serve you throughout your entire journey.
Your Action Plan: Start Today
